STRIDE 2017 Webinars
From Rumble Strips to Text Stops: Infrastructure Solutions for Distracted Driving
- 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
- 1 PDHs
This webinar will discuss the project goals and outcomes related to "Technology Transfer: Distracted Driving: Overview Summary and Assessment of Ways to Alleviate", funded by the STRIDE Center. The researchers will be speaking live, followed by a Q&A with regarding infrastructure solutions and distracted driving. The webinar will include the workshop phase of the project in which various members of the community were invited to learn more about the infrastructure solutions being planned to mitigate distracted driving and those currently in place in various states across the U.S. These data were collected by surveying various State Department of Transportation engineers across the country, and the results and findings are discussed. The infrastructure solutions suggested in these surveys were developed into a driving scenario so that workshop attendees could experience the implementations in a simulated environment at the UAB TRIP Lab's state-of-the-art driving simulator. The pros and cons of the most commonly implemented infrastructure solutions used to mitigate distracted driving are discussed, and more was learned about the costs of some of these solutions from discussions with Mr. Tim Barnett, State Safety Engineer at the Alabama Department of Transportation.
FREE! However, there will be a $25 charge, if you are interested in receiving 1 PDH.

Dr. Robert Peters is a professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil, Construction, & Environmental Engineering at UAB, joining the School of Engineering faculty in 2001. Prior to his affiliation with UAB, he served for a year as Vice-President of Technology Development for a small business firm (TechSavants, Inc. located in Wheaton, Illinois). He also served for more than 14 years as Research Area Leader in the Energy Systems Division of Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois, where he coordinated and supervised research activities in the soil and groundwater remediation area, focusing on physical/chemical treatment technologies. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the States of Illinois and Indiana and a certified Hazardous Waste Site Operations Worker. His research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the University Transportation Center for Alabama, the Alabama Water Resources Research Institute, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, UAB Faculty Development Grant Program, and the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers (AESF) Society.
Dr. Despina Stavrinos is the Director of the Translational Research for Injury Prevention (TRIP) Laboratory. The TRIP Lab offers students at various levels of training (high school, undergraduate, graduate, post-doc) and from various disciplines (e.g., psychology, medicine, public health, engineering, computer science) the opportunity to conduct high quality behavioral research. Since its establishment in 2009, nearly 100 students have been trained under Stavrinos' mentorship.
